A car went off Eureka Canyon Road in Corralitos Saturday morning and tumbled somewhere between 400 and 600 feet down a steep embankment, trapping two people inside until rescue crews could haul them back up using ropes. Both occupants walked away with only minor injuries, according to the agency that led the response.
CAL FIRE CZU said its firefighters responded around 8:30 a.m. to reports of the crash, and that arriving units found the vehicle well off the roadway with two people still inside, according to a statement posted by CAL FIRE CZU
on social media. The agency, which describes itself as the CAL FIRE San Mateo–Santa Cruz Unit, said crews set up a rope rescue system to reach the vehicle and then hauled both occupants safely back up to the road.
Minor Injuries Despite Steep Drop
Given the vehicle traveled hundreds of feet down the embankment, the outcome could have been far worse. Instead, the agency's report said both occupants sustained only minor injuries, and AMR transported them for evaluation. No further details on the occupants' identities, the vehicle involved, or what caused the crash were included in the agency's statement.
The rescue drew a multi-agency response. CAL FIRE CZU's Burrell and Corralitos stations worked alongside Pajaro Valley Fire, AMR and CHP-Santa Cruz, and the agency said it requested additional resources as the operation unfolded. Afterward, CAL FIRE CZU thanked the responding partner agencies for their teamwork in pulling off the rescue.
Steep Terrain a Recurring Hazard on Rural Roads
Embankment rescues like this one are not unique to Corralitos. In a separate incident, the California Highway Patrol's San Jose office said first responders rescued two occupants after a vehicle went down a 100-foot dirt embankment near Marsh and Arroyo Hondo roads, according to a report from Yahoo News. That crash happened around 1:15 p.m., and the occupants' conditions were not disclosed, per the same report. There is no indication the two incidents are connected.
Eureka Canyon Road itself has seen serious crashes before. The California Highway Patrol said a 58-year-old Watsonville man, identified as Sean Wilkins Sr., died in a solo-vehicle crash on Eureka Canyon Road south of Las Colinas Drive, as reported by KION. Nothing in the available reporting ties that earlier fatal crash to Saturday's rescue.
