A man and a woman were injured early Sunday when gunfire broke out near 375 S. State St. in downtown Salt Lake City, and police say an adult male suspect is now in custody. Officers responded to multiple reports of shots fired at about 3:06 a.m.; the area remained an active crime scene overnight.
According to Gephardt Daily, Salt Lake City Police Lt. Cyr told the outlet that both victims suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Cyr said the two had already been taken to the hospital in private vehicles before officers even reached the scene, meaning investigators had to piece together what happened without the injured parties present.
Shell Casings Found at State Street and 400 South
Investigators located multiple shell casings in a parking lot at the northeast corner of State Street and 400 South, per the same account from Lt. Cyr. That detail, combined with the victims being taken to the hospital in private vehicles, left police working to reconstruct the sequence of events.
Despite the chaotic start, police said they believe the shooting was an isolated incident and that there is no ongoing threat to the public. An adult male suspect was taken into custody in connection with the case, though further details on charges or his identity were not released in the initial report.
Downtown Shootings Have Flared Up Before
Sunday’s incident is not the first time gunfire has rattled the stretch of downtown Salt Lake City near State Street. Gephardt Daily reported a March 2026 bar shooting in downtown Salt Lake City around 1:30 a.m. that left one person injured. That case later drew federal attention: the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Utah announced an indictment alleging a convicted felon had illegally possessed a firearm as a restricted person following that shooting.
In August 2024, a State Street-area shooting left a man in critical condition and a woman stable with non-life-threatening injuries, according to KUTV, which reported no arrests had been made at the time. Gunfire has occurred downtown on multiple occasions over several years, but these incidents alone do not show whether shootings are becoming more frequent.
No further details on the suspect’s identity, potential charges, or a motive behind Sunday’s shooting have been released. Police have not indicated any relationship between the suspect and the two people who were injured.
