Fisk University is set to honor producer Teddy Riley, the man often called the architect of New Jack Swing, at its Gold & Blue Jubilee Honors Celebration on Thursday, November 5, 2026, at the National Museum of African American Music in Nashville. The event falls during Fisk Homecoming, and VIP tickets have already sold out, with general admission seats going for $160 as part of a Homecoming flash sale.
The celebration is hosted by the Fisk University Alumni Association and the Fisk Jubilee Singers Alumni Association, according to NewsChannel 5. The Gold & Blue Jubilee is described as an annual event recognizing people who have made a lasting impact on music, culture and the community, and this year's theme is “The Architect of Sound, Strategy & Legacy.” Riley's production credits include influential R&B and hip-hop records from the late 1980s and 1990s, work the station notes helped shape a sound that continues to influence artists today.
A Night of Performances and Homecoming Spirit
The evening will feature performances from the Fisk Jubilee Singers and other artists, the station's report states. Doors, food and a cocktail hour begin at 6:30 p.m., with the Honors Celebration itself starting at 7:30 p.m., and an official after-party follows immediately. Admission includes food, and the night is part of this year's Homecoming festivities.
Attendance supports Fisk University students and the Fisk Jubilee Singers Endowment Fund, per the same account. Riley, for his part, said the honor carries personal weight, telling the station, “this is one of the things that will be on my wall, and I will cherish this.” He also described Fisk as one of the most prestigious HBCUs to him.
The Sound Riley Built
New Jack Swing, the genre most associated with Riley, blended rap, dance-pop and R&B with touches of disco, soul and rock and roll, according to an oral history from Red Bull Music Academy. That same account notes the sound's reach extended well beyond music, seeping into films like House Party, television shows including In Living Color and Martin, and fashion brands such as Cross Colours.
Following in the Footsteps of Past Honorees
This is not the first time Fisk's Gold & Blue Jubilee has spotlighted a major producer. A year earlier, organizers announced the 2025 Gold & Blue Jubilee Bash would honor Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, according to The Tennessee Tribune, with that event held on November 6, 2025, at the same National Museum of African American Music venue and proceeds going toward Fisk University scholarships.
Coverage of an earlier Gold & Blue Jubilee Bash Heritage Awards, the second annual edition of the gala, described a room awash in gold and navy decor, as Nfocus Magazine reported. The Fisk Jubilee Singers opened that awards show, continuing their role as a fixture of the celebration now carried into this week's tribute to Riley.
