Fort Myers Beach will glow with handmade lanterns this Saturday as What’s Up FMB brings back its Illuminations Walking Parade for a second year, with organizers saying more than 230 participants have already signed up to march. The free, family-friendly procession will wind from Estero Boulevard to Bayside Park, lighting up the island after dark with whatever residents and visitors can dream up to carry.
According to Fort Myers Beach Talk, the parade is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 7, 2026, at 5:45 p.m., though Florida Weekly reports the walk will begin at approximately 6 p.m. Both outlets agree on the starting point near 2307 Estero Boulevard, with the illuminated procession traveling north on Estero Boulevard before turning onto Old San Carlos Boulevard and concluding at Bayside Park.
Dawn Miller, president and co-founder of What’s Up FMB, said the event is tailor-made for the barrier island community. Per Fort Myers Beach Talk, Miller described the parade as perfect for the island and said parade participants can use handmade lanterns, adding that anything that lights up is suitable. Individuals, families, neighborhood groups, businesses, schools and community organizations are all welcome to join the walk, and participation and spectator attendance are both free, Florida Weekly notes.
Lanterns, Accessibility and Who Can Join
What’s Up FMB describes the walk as a family-friendly, ADA-accessible event, and the station's report adds that mobility devices are welcome while golf carts, bicycles and motorized displays are not permitted. Participants are encouraged to create and carry their own illuminated lanterns, and the organization is donating lantern supplies to the Fort Myers Beach Public Library and Bay Oaks Recreational Campus to help residents get started. Additional workshop dates, locations, costs and registration details will be announced soon, the same account states.
Spectators are encouraged to gather along Estero Boulevard and Old San Carlos Boulevard to watch the lanterns pass, and may also welcome participants as they arrive at Bayside Park. Registration updates and lantern-building announcements will be posted at whatsupfmb.com and on the organization's social media pages, per the same report.
Road Closures Expected Around the Route
Fort Myers Beach Talk reports that Estero Boulevard will be closed from Mango Street to Old San Carlos Boulevard from 5:45 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Saturday, and that town of Fort Myers Beach officials say the Matanzas Pass Bridge will be closed to oncoming traffic from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. the same evening. Motorists, residents and visitors are encouraged to plan travel accordingly and allow extra time traveling to and from the island.
Sponsors and a Growing Island Tradition
Sponsor listings for the parade vary slightly between sources. What’s Up FMB’s own site credits the King Family Foundation, Alex King Group, The Whale and Fowler Construction & Development, while Beach Talk Radio News lists those same backers alongside Surfside Iced Tea + Vodka. What’s Up FMB calls this year’s event the Second Annual Illuminations Parade, and its events page describes the Illuminations Parade as a tradition that lights up Fort Myers Beach each November with glowing lanterns.
Miller has pointed to the inaugural walk as proof the idea resonates with islanders. Speaking to Florida Weekly in earlier coverage, she said the first Illuminations Parade showed just how much the community embraces events that bring people together. With registration already topping 230 names ahead of Saturday, organizers appear to be banking on that same turnout for round two.
