Two Port Charlotte residents were injured and two Fort Myers residents were killed in a three-vehicle crash on Alligator Alley over the weekend, after an 18-year-old driver lost control of her Toyota Camry, struck a U-Haul truck and then slammed into a BMW that flipped on the highway.
The crash occurred in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 75 in Broward County, about 40 miles west of Fort Lauderdale, according to yoursun.com. Accounts of the timing differ: yoursun.com reported the crash happened at 9:53 a.m., while WINK News reported it happened around 9:53 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31, west of mile marker 45.
According to WINK News, the 18-year-old woman was driving her Toyota Camry eastbound in the outside lane when she lost control of the vehicle. The Camry struck the rear of a U-Haul truck that was pulled over, then crossed into the path of the BMW. The station reported that the front left portion of the Camry struck the right side of the BMW, sending the SUV traveling northeast before it overturned on the highway.
Two Killed, Three Hurt in the Pileup
The Camry driver and her passenger, a 29-year-old man, were both from Fort Myers and died at the scene, according to the Sun-Sentinel. The two occupants of the BMW were both from Port Charlotte. Per WINK News, the BMW's 19-year-old male driver suffered minor injuries, while his 37-year-old female passenger suffered serious injuries.
The driver of the U-Haul truck also suffered minor injuries, though reports differ on his exact age. Yoursun.com identified him as a 43-year-old man from West Palm Beach, while WINK News reported he was a 40-year-old man, also from West Palm Beach.
Investigation Continues
The Florida Highway Patrol's investigation into the crash remains ongoing, the Sun-Sentinel reports. No further details on the cause of the Camry driver losing control have been released.
Alligator Alley, the stretch of I-75 that cuts across the Everglades between Naples and Fort Lauderdale, has seen a string of serious crashes in the past year. In May, two drivers died in a four-vehicle collision on the Broward County segment of the highway after a commuter bus was stopped in a travel lane, according to the Naples Daily News. A fatal motorcycle crash involving two motorcycles was also under investigation in western Broward County in April, per Local 10, and a December 2025 pileup involving three commercial trucks and four passenger vehicles shut down the highway for hours in Collier County, according to CBS Miami.
