A night out near La Cantera turned violent early Sunday when gunfire broke out in the 17000 block of La Cantera Parkway, leaving a 34-year-old man wounded in the lower body. Police say the shooting happened around 2 a.m. after a group was removed from a nearby business following a disturbance.
According to WOAI, officers said the group had caused a disturbance inside the business and was kicked out before the gunfire started. As the group headed back to their vehicles, one or more people reportedly opened fire on the business, according to the station's report.
The 34-year-old man was standing outside the business when he was struck by gunfire and taken to a nearby hospital, the outlet reported. His condition has not been released, and police have not announced any arrests. The investigation remains ongoing, per the same account.
No Connection to Earlier La Cantera Alarm
The shooting is separate from an unrelated report a day earlier, when San Antonio Fire officials said there was no active shooter threat in the La Cantera area amid a reported Saturday afternoon incident, according to KENS5. The shooting came a day after that reported incident.
The La Cantera shooting also follows a string of other San Antonio nightlife-adjacent gunfire incidents in recent weeks. A man was hospitalized in late October after being shot inside a bar on the city's Southwest Side, San Antonio police told KSAT. Downtown, a bar fight on College Street escalated into gunfire that left a man dead at the scene and triggered a multi-agency chase that ended in a crash, according to FOX San Antonio. A separate downtown confrontation turned fatal, with police saying 23-year-old DuJuan West was killed and 26-year-old Jonas Torrez was charged with murder, the station reported.
Citywide Crime Trends Show a Mixed Picture
San Antonio's overall crime numbers have been trending downward even as incidents like this one continue to surface. The San Antonio Police Department reported a 6.1% decline in overall crime during the first nine months of 2026 compared with the same period last year, according to San Antonio Report. Homicides fell sharply too, with SAPD reporting 80 through September, down from 126 during the same stretch of 2025.
But not every category moved in the same direction. Crimes against people ticked up 1.5% over that nine-month window, and reported assaults rose 2.2%, from 22,454 offenses to 22,950, per the outlet's report. SAPD Chief Jesse Salame has said proactive efforts to arrest people involved in shootings and other violent crimes may be contributing to the drop in homicides even as assault numbers climb.
The mixed trend follows a broader decline recorded in 2025, when SAPD Chief William McManus told the City Council's Public Safety Committee that overall crime fell more than 13% from January through November 2025 compared with the same period in 2024, according to KSAT. Homicides that year dropped nearly 17%, from 119 cases to 99, while average emergency response times improved to 5 minutes and 29 seconds. Officials cautioned that the 2025 figures were not final and could still be revised because of reclassification, ongoing investigations or delayed victim reporting.
As of Sunday, no further details on the La Cantera shooting, including the business involved or the identities of those sought, had been released. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact San Antonio police as the investigation continues.
