A Homestead man is dead after his car crossed the median on U.S. Highway 27 South in Belle Glade and slammed head-on into an oncoming Volvo, a collision that left the roadway littered with wreckage from both vehicles. Humberto Brea Cruz was pronounced dead at the scene, and authorities said his next of kin has been notified.
According to a crash report detailed by CBS12, Brea Cruz was driving a Chevrolet Malibu southbound in the inside lane of the 13700 block of U.S. Highway 27 South in Belle Glade when he lost control of the car for an unknown reason. The Malibu crossed the median into the northbound lanes, directly into the path of a 2015 Volvo, the report says.
The Volvo’s driver attempted to swerve left to avoid the crash, but the two vehicles collided head-on, per the same report. The force of the impact sent the Malibu back into the inside southbound lane, where it came to rest, while the Volvo crossed the median and came to rest across both southbound lanes.
Dispatch Logged Before Dawn, Second Driver Unhurt
The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to the crash at 5:42 a.m., according to WPBF. That station’s report identifies the Volvo’s driver as a 52-year-old Hialeah man, noting no injuries were reported for him. The outlet also reported that Brea Cruz was driving a 2016 Chevrolet Malibu and was declared deceased at the scene.
Both drivers were wearing seatbelts, and alcohol or drugs were not suspected in the crash, per the same account. The cause of the crash remains under investigation, CBS12 reports.
Other Fatal Wrecks Have Struck Nearby Roads This Year
Belle Glade and the surrounding stretch of U.S. 27 have seen other deadly crashes this year, though the available reporting does not tie them together as part of any broader pattern. In a separate incident, a Nissan Altima was traveling the wrong way, south in the northbound lane of the 900 block of Duda Road in Belle Glade at 6:19 a.m., when a northbound semi-truck carrying corn struck the sedan head-on, according to CBS12.
Further south, a collision involving two cars and a semi-truck on U.S. Highway 27 in South Bay left two people dead and two others hospitalized on August 1, WPBF reported. A 13-year-old girl who had been a rear-seat passenger in a Cadillac XTS involved in that crash died six days later, on August 7, according to the station’s report, which noted that a Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office account said the Cadillac lost control, rotated, crossed the median and entered the opposite lane of traffic.
