Chicago woke to mostly cloudy skies and temperatures in the mid-60s Tuesday, but the unusually warm start comes with a blustery catch. South winds will strengthen through the day, with rain showers moving in later and a wetter, cooler pattern taking over by Wednesday.
Strong South Winds Lead The Day
Temperatures should warm into the low 70s Tuesday. South winds of 15 to 25 mph could produce gusts up to 40 mph, making the lakefront, bridges and exposed streets feel especially rough.
The National Weather Service Chicago/Romeoville says showers have a chance to develop after 1 p.m., with the rain becoming more widespread tonight. The forecast gives Tuesday a 40% chance of rain, rising to 90% tonight as temperatures settle near 61.
Rain Arrives Before A Cooler Turn
Rain showers are likely overnight, with widespread amounts exceeding one-half inch across much of the area and locally higher totals, especially in the western half. The broader forecast discussion calls for a soaking rain across much of the area before showers taper from west to east Wednesday morning.
Wednesday will stay mostly cloudy with showers likely, highs in the upper 50s to low 60s and temperatures falling toward the upper 50s during the afternoon. Boaters should also note a Small Craft Advisory for Illinois nearshore waters through early Wednesday, while no land-based watches or warnings are currently listed.
More Seasonable Weather Settles In
Thursday brings a partial break, with partly sunny skies and a high near 58, though another chance of showers returns Thursday night and Friday. Friday’s high should reach only about 54 under mostly cloudy skies.
The weekend looks quieter but cool, with highs near 53 Saturday and 55 Sunday, plus a few lingering shower chances. Monday is currently the brightest day in the outlook, with sunny skies and a high near 56.
