A 48-year-old Maricopa woman died Tuesday evening after she was struck by a vehicle on California Street, according to officials who released her identity this week. Frances Max Erikson was hit around 5:30 p.m. and pronounced dead at the scene roughly 18 minutes later.
Emergency personnel responded to the 400 block of California Street in Maricopa after Erikson was hit, according to KGET. The Kern County Coroner's Office identified her as Frances Max Erikson of Maricopa, confirming she was the victim of Tuesday's collision.
Erikson died at the scene around 5:48 p.m., the Kern County Sheriff's Office said, according to the same report.
A County With a Troubling Record on Deadly Streets
Tuesday's death adds to a pattern that has alarmed Kern County safety advocates in recent years. A separate KGET report found that 55 people died on Kern County streets in 2024, surpassing the previous year's total of 54. Of those 55 deaths, 43 happened at night, the station reported.
Statewide, pedestrian fatality trends in California rose from 2016 through 2022 before beginning to decline, according to the California Active Transportation Safety Information Pages. Bicycle fatalities followed a different path over the same period, climbing from 2016 to 2018, easing between 2019 and 2021, then spiking sharply in 2022 before trending downward again. The organization's county-level crash data spans 2014 through 2025, though figures for 2025 remain provisional as of June 8, 2026.
Other Fatal Crashes Have Struck the Same Small Community
Maricopa has seen other deadly collisions in recent years. In one earlier case, a woman and a man died at 4 p.m. on a Friday in a crash in the area, and the coroner's office later identified one of the victims as Janneth Guerrero, 55, of Bakersfield, who died in a collision on Highway 166 west of Elkhorn Grade Road while riding as a passenger in a vehicle, according to Bakersfield.com. The California Highway Patrol investigated that crash, the outlet reported.
Elsewhere in Kern County, a man died in Oildale in December 2024 after falling off his bicycle into the street and being struck by a Honda Accord on Airport Drive, the station's report on 2024 traffic deaths noted. That crash, like Tuesday's death in Maricopa, underscored the risks pedestrians and cyclists face on county roadways, particularly after dark.
No further details about the vehicle involved in Erikson's death, the driver, or any resulting investigation were included in available reporting.
