A Miami-Dade couple is facing child neglect charges after their four-month-old daughter was found with four broken ribs, including one fracture that was already healing. Gabriella Trabrau, 26, and Kevin Carrasco, 27, were arrested after bringing their infant to the hospital when they reported hearing a cracking noise and seeing her crying uncontrollably.
According to Telemundo 51, doctors examining the baby found four rib fractures in total: one in the process of healing and three that were acute. A child protection team determined that the fractures were caused by abuse, according to the police report cited by the outlet. Trabrau and Carrasco were caring for the child when the injuries were discovered, and both have been charged with child neglect, according to NBC 6 South Florida.
Parents Say They Heard a Crack, Then Rushed to the Hospital
Per the police report, the couple said they took their daughter to the hospital after hearing a cracking sound and watching her cry inconsolably. Carrasco told investigators he believed someone had abused his daughter, but said he didn't know who was responsible, and he denied ever harming her himself, the station reported. Trabrau and Carrasco live in a gated subdivision in southwest Miami-Dade, according to the same report.
A judge ordered both parents to stay away from the child, with a dependency court judge set to decide whether they can be near their daughter again once an investigation concludes, per the outlet's reporting. Trabrau and Carrasco were told they would need to hire private attorneys, and it was unclear whether either currently had one, the station noted.
Bond Set, Custody Status Still Unclear
Bond was set at $2,500 for each parent, and both have since posted bond, according to the same report. NBC 6 South Florida said it reached out to Florida's Department of Children and Families to ask who currently has custody of the baby, but had not received a response as of publication. Telemundo 51 reported the same outstanding question in its own coverage, noting it was still awaiting word from the agency.
Local 10 separately reported that a Miami-Dade mother and father faced felony charges after staff at Nicklaus Children's Hospital admitted their four-month-old daughter with four rib fractures, corroborating the broader outline of the case circulating among South Florida outlets.
What Florida Law Says About Child Neglect
Under Florida Statute § 827.03, neglect can be based on repeated conduct or even a single incident or omission that causes, or could reasonably be expected to cause, serious injury or a substantial risk of death. The same statute classifies aggravated child abuse as a first-degree felony, though nothing in the available reporting indicates that charge has been filed in this case. Investigators have not publicly identified who caused the baby's injuries, and Carrasco has denied responsibility.
