Fifteen years ago, a 7-year-old named Jordon spent a day as Sheriff for a Day in Palm Beach County, facing medical challenges and wondering whether his dream of becoming a police officer was even possible. Today, the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office says that boy is a sergeant in the United States Army.
The office shared Jordon's story in a post this week, writing that “Sometimes, a few words of encouragement can change a life,” according to PBSO
. On September 7, 2011, Jordon, then 7 years old, took part in the agency's Sheriff for a Day program, which the sheriff's office describes on its own site as a community good-news initiative dating back to at least 2022, per the

A Sheriff's Words Stuck With Him
During that 2011 visit, Sheriff Ric Bradshaw reportedly told Jordon, “You are a brave and strong young man. One day you will grow up to serve and protect and be the man you want to be.” The sheriff's office says Jordon carried those words with him despite the medical challenges he faced at the time, and despite not being sure his dream of becoming a police officer was within reach.
Years later, Jordon chose a different kind of service. The sheriff's office says he went on to serve in the United States Army and has since become a sergeant, a path the agency frames as having roots in that single day spent wearing a badge as a child.
A Letter Nearly 15 Years Later
The sheriff's office says Jordon's mother wrote to Sheriff Bradshaw about how much that childhood conversation meant to her son, describing the letter as coming nearly 15 years after the original visit. PBSO's post does not detail the specifics of Jordon's medical challenges or his Army service beyond his rank, and no further details were included in the agency's account.
A related YouTube Short titled “PBSO — Sheriff for a Day,” noted by the YouTube search listing, points to the program's longer history, though no additional details were available. For now, PBSO is holding Jordon up as proof that a brief encounter with encouragement can echo for years.
