Salt Lake City is waking up to a damp, chilly Monday after overnight rain, but the wet weather should fade before 8 a.m. Clouds are expected to break for partly sunny skies, with temperatures topping out near 49 degrees before slipping through the afternoon. Monday night will turn partly cloudy and cold, with a low around 34.

Salt Lake City International Airport was reporting 46 degrees, overcast skies and north winds at 9 mph. The forecast calls for northerly winds, later shifting to southerly drainage winds, according to the National Weather Service, but wet roads and a brisk start could still make for a dreary morning commute.

Mountain Snow Keeps Canyon Travel Complicated

The valley may get a break, but Utah's mountains are in for a much more wintry day. Forecasters expect 3 to 6 inches of additional snow around 7,000 feet, more than a foot above 9,000 feet, and localized totals of 18 to 24 inches in the upper Cottonwoods and western Uintas.

A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect through 11 a.m. Monday for two northern Utah mountain zones. Anyone heading into the canyons should be ready for snow-covered roads, reduced visibility and rapidly changing conditions even as Salt Lake City begins to dry out.

Tuesday Is The Calm Before Another Shower

Tuesday looks like the week's first clean reset, with mostly sunny skies and a high near 55 degrees. That break will be brief, with a weak system expected Wednesday.

Showers are then expected to continue into Wednesday, mainly before 5 p.m., while temperatures reach only about 51 degrees. Wednesday night should turn partly cloudy, with patchy frost possible between 2 and 5 a.m.

A Sunny Finish To The Week

Late-week weather looks much friendlier for outdoor plans. Thursday, Friday and Saturday should be mostly sunny with highs near 55, followed by a sunny Sunday reaching around 60 degrees.

In other words, Salt Lake City gets a soggy start, a quick midweek encore and then several days that look far better suited to a walk, a hike or a patio coffee.
