A Stretch of Highway With a Troubled History

This isn't the first time mile markers near 263 and 264 on I-40 in Smith County have seen serious wrecks. Back on April 1, the rescue squad had what Smith County Insider described as a busy evening on I-40, responding to an SUV rollover at the 264 eastbound mile marker where the patient had to be extricated before being flown to Vanderbilt via Lifelight, followed hours later by a semi-truck rollover at the 263 westbound marker whose patient was also airlifted to Vanderbilt.

Another single-vehicle rollover was reported around 4 a.m. on a Sunday, July 16, near the 264 mile marker westbound, per the same outlet's reporting. And a crash reported just after 8 p.m. on a Tuesday, Sept. 24, near mile marker 263 turned deadly — according to WKRN, the Tennessee Highway Patrol said one person was killed and two others were critically injured in that incident.

Separately, NewsChannel 5 reported on a rollover involving a Subaru SUV that ran off the road near mile marker 251 while headed west, a crash in which two children were ejected and an 11-year-old died after being struck by a tractor-trailer, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol.

No information about the patient's identity or condition following Tuesday's crash has been released.
