San Francisco City Hall hosted a Diwali celebration, marking the Festival of Lights. The gathering was separate from the city's official Diwali celebration, scheduled to return to the Financial District for a third year.

A City Hall First, Distinct From Downtown's Official Celebration

According to KTVU FOX 2, a Diwali celebration was held at San Francisco City Hall. That gathering is separate from the city's broader official Diwali observance, which The San Francisco Standard has reported began in 2024 with a Bhangra & Beats Night Market celebration on Battery and Clay streets downtown, described at the time as the city's first official observance of the Indian holiday. That 2024 event, announced by then-Mayor London Breed for Nov. 15 from 5 to 10 p.m., drew thousands to the Financial District, per the Standard's reporting.

Time Out's coverage of the same event noted the night market stretched across three blocks between Battery and Clay streets and was free and open to all ages, with more than 30 local artisans and vendors expected to take part. The San Francisco Examiner has reported that the Bhangra and Beats night market has served as the city's official Diwali celebration for multiple consecutive years, with the event first debuting in 2023.

Downtown's Official Celebration Returns Nov. 13

The official City and County of San Francisco Diwali Celebration is scheduled to return for its third year on Friday, Nov. 13, from 4 to 9 p.m., according to a release from Yerba Buena Gardens Festival. Mayor Daniel Lurie said in that release that the celebration is about “bringing families and neighbors together, energizing our public spaces, and supporting our local businesses.”

The Bhangra & Beats season drew more than 34,000 people across three installments in 2024, the Standard reported, while the Examiner reported the prior year's street party drew an estimated 10,000 attendees according to its organizer.

Part of a Wider Pattern of Downtown Events

The Diwali celebrations sit alongside other street events in downtown San Francisco. A separate Bhangra & Beats Night Market held in July at Yerba Buena Gardens brought an estimated 6,800 attendees and generated more than $302,600 in estimated economic impact for local businesses and vendors, according to the Yerba Buena Gardens Festival release.

The official celebration is scheduled for Nov. 13 in the Financial District.
