A person riding a scooter suffered life-threatening injuries Sunday night after colliding with a car at the corner of Hyde and O’Farrell streets in San Francisco’s Tenderloin neighborhood. The crash was reported at about 8:15 p.m. and involved a four-door sedan, according to police.

San Francisco police said the scooter rider suffered life-threatening injuries in the collision, as reported by SFGATE. As of Monday, the rider’s condition was not immediately available, and the San Francisco Police Department had released no other details about the case, including how the collision happened or who was involved.

A Known Trouble Spot for Scooter Crashes

The intersection sits in one of the parts of the city where scooter collisions have long clustered. Since 2017, nearly half of all scooter crashes citywide — 46 percent — have occurred in SoMa, the Tenderloin, and the Mission, according to an analysis from Mission Local. That same reporting found scooter-involved collisions across San Francisco jumped from 97 in 2020 to 153 in 2021, a 58 percent increase, as rental scooter trips in the city climbed to 1.72 million that year, a 48 percent rise from the year before.

The surge in incidents has also shown up in local emergency rooms. Injuries involving powered stand-up devices citywide rose from 36 in 2018 to 315 in 2025, per data cited by the San Francisco Standard. San Francisco General’s emergency room chief, Christopher Colwell, told the outlet that injuries from e-bikes, scooters, and other stand-up devices have become the department’s second-most-common source of trauma, trailing only falls among older adults. Colwell said he now sees at least two or three such patients a day, compared with sometimes going a day or two without one five years earlier.

Other Recent Crashes Near the Same Streets

Sunday’s crash is not the only scooter collision reported near that stretch of the Tenderloin and Civic Center in recent years, though each incident is a separate case. In May 2025, police investigated a hit-and-run in which a city vehicle struck a scooter rider near McAllister and Hyde streets, just blocks from Sunday’s crash site, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. That rider, identified as Tenderloin resident Omar Ward, said the driver struck him while turning and then left the scene; paramedics evaluated him for non-life-threatening injuries.

In another separate incident, police said an e-scooter rider fleeing officers struck a 72-year-old woman near Powell and O’Farrell streets, according to CBS News. The woman suffered a fractured elbow and a broken wrist that required surgery. Neither of those earlier cases is connected to Sunday’s crash at Hyde and O’Farrell, and no additional details about the circumstances of the latest collision have been released.
