A 47-year-old Springfield man is dead after losing control of his car while merging onto eastbound I-70 from U.S. Route 68 in Clark County on Wednesday evening, sending his vehicle into the path of an eastbound semi tractor-trailer. Travis L. Vance died at the scene near milepost 52; the truck driver was not hurt.

Entrance Ramp Merge Turned Deadly

The crash happened around 7:09 p.m. Wednesday on eastbound I-70 near milepost 52, according to ABC 6. Troopers said Vance was merging onto eastbound I-70 from U.S. 68 when he lost control of his car on the entrance ramp, a detail also reported by WHIO TV. His car then veered into the path of an eastbound semi tractor-trailer, which struck the driver's side of the vehicle.

Vance was pronounced dead at the scene, while the semi driver walked away unharmed, per the same ABC 6 account. Light rain was falling at the time, and officials said speed and wet roadways may have contributed to the crash, though a final cause has not been determined. The Ohio State Highway Patrol said the crash remained under investigation.

Hours-Long Lane Closure Followed Crash

Eastbound I-70 traffic was limited to a single lane for about three hours while crews cleaned up the scene and investigators worked the crash, the station's report notes. By the time of that report, all lanes had reopened to normal traffic flow.

Another Deadly Crash Hit Same Stretch Weeks Earlier

Wednesday's fatal wreck is not the only deadly incident this stretch of I-70 has seen recently. A six-vehicle crash on a Friday morning earlier this fall left one woman dead and two others hospitalized with serious injuries, according to WDTN. In that crash, a westbound semitrailer lost control near mile marker 48 in Mad River Township, hit the median barrier, overturned, and came to rest across the westbound lanes before a second semitrailer, driven by Vicky Arora, 34, of Jamaica, New York, struck it. Arora was pronounced dead at the scene, and the Springfield Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol said it was continuing to investigate that crash as well.

Statewide fatal crash data from the Ohio Traffic Safety Office shows Clark County recorded 20 fatal crashes in 2025, listed as less than one percent of all crashes in the county that year, though the available data does not provide enough context to explain the underlying calculation or establish a broader trend for this particular stretch of highway.
