A fire that tore through a Sunnyvale apartment building Sunday afternoon left one person dead, with one unit fully engulfed and three others being impacted by the fire, while investigators continued working to determine both the cause of the blaze and the circumstances surrounding the death. Public safety officers were called to 1235 Wildwood Avenue around 12:30 p.m. on multiple reports of a fire, and when they arrived, they found one unit fully engulfed in flames.

The Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety said officers evacuated residents from the building, including those living in the four apartment units impacted by the fire. Crews managed to bring the flames under control within 40 minutes. As reported by KRON4, crews found one apartment unit fully engulfed in flames while three others were being impacted by the fire at the time of their arrival.

One person was found deceased inside the apartment where the fire originated, according to the department. Both the cause of the fire and the circumstances surrounding that death remain under investigation, and officials said no additional information was available at the time.

Mutual Aid From Neighboring Departments

The Santa Clara County Fire Department and the Mountain View Fire Department both provided mutual aid during the response, helping Sunnyvale crews get the blaze under control before it could spread further. The same KRON4 report notes that firefighters evacuated residents from the building as the fire impacted multiple units.

Sunday's fire is at least the second apartment blaze to hit Sunnyvale in 2026. A two-alarm fire ripped through a complex on Kirkland Drive in January, displacing two dozen residents, according to The Mercury News. That blaze was reported at 10:43 a.m. in the 1600 block of Kirkland Drive, with authorities arriving within four minutes, and left three of the complex's eight units with significant fire and smoke damage while the building as a whole sustained damage. No injuries were reported in that incident, and the American Red Cross stepped in to assist displaced residents.

Other Sunnyvale Fires

Sunnyvale has seen other apartment fires in incidents reported separately by KTVU and NBC Bay Area. KTVU reported that about two dozen residents were forced from their homes in the Kirkland Drive fire, which happened Tuesday morning. NBC Bay Area reported a distinct three-alarm blaze on the morning of October 28, 2009, that displaced between 25 and 30 residents.

No further details have been released about Sunday's fire on Wildwood Avenue, including the identity of the person who died or what sparked the flames. Investigators have not said when they expect to determine a cause.
