The Outsiders touches down at San Diego Civic Theatre for one week starting Tuesday, running through Sunday, Nov. 8, marking the Tony-winning musical's first appearance in the city with its North American tour. It is something of a homecoming: the show had its world premiere at La Jolla Playhouse back in 2023 before heading to Broadway.

According to NBC San Diego, the production will play the Civic Theatre for one week, from Tuesday, Nov. 3 through Sunday, Nov. 8, returning to San Diego after its 2023 world premiere at La Jolla Playhouse. The musical is adapted from S.E. Hinton's novel and Francis Ford Coppola's film, according to San Diego Theatres, and is set in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 1967, following Ponyboy Curtis, his best friend Johnny Cade and their Greaser family of outsiders as they clash with their wealthier rivals, the Socs. The show swept four 2024 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, per the same venue listing.

A Rain-Soaked Rumble Years in the Making

The production's most talked-about sequence remains its climactic street fight staged in pouring rain. As reported by the Los Angeles Times, that roughly three-minute rumble involves more than 100 gallons of water, which exits through a drainage system on the floor and is then recycled for the following show. What looks like loose gravel strewn across the stage is actually EPDM synthetic rubber rather than real dirt, the paper reports.

Adam Rapp wrote the musical's book, and Jamestown Revival co-wrote the score alongside Justin Levine, per San Diego Theatres' event listing. Choreography came from siblings Rick Kuperman and Jeff Kuperman, under direction by Danya Taymor. The San Diego Union-Tribune notes the musical opened on Broadway on April 11, 2024, at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre in Manhattan.

A Rare Broadway Financial Milestone

Financially, The Outsiders has become something of an outlier in an industry where new productions routinely struggle to turn a profit. The same Union-Tribune report states that producers announced they had recouped the show's initial $22 million investment as of Dec. 28, 2025, and that it has since played more than 760 performances to more than 781,000 audience members. The paper adds that no new musical had recouped its investment since 2022 before The Outsiders reached that milestone.

The New York Times, in reporting on the same financial news, put the numbers at 763 performances, 781,000 audience members and $121 million in ticket sales as of Jan. 18. The paper also reported that the cast album's songs have been streamed more than 85 million times across all platforms, according to the show's publicists, and noted that only three other new musicals from the last six years — Six, MJ and & Juliet — had become profitable.

The Tour Finds Its Own Footing

The road production has posted strong numbers of its own. Per Playbill, the North American touring production recouped its $11 million capitalization cost after just 29 weeks on the road, and had been seen by more than 548,915 patrons in 23 cities across North America. The Union-Tribune separately reported that future productions of the show are planned for London's West End, Asia and Australia, alongside the ongoing North American run.

For San Diego audiences, the week-long engagement offers a chance to see a show that started just up the coast at La Jolla Playhouse now arriving with Broadway's imprimatur and a national tour's momentum behind it — rain, rubber gravel, recycled water and all.
