Two people are dead after a three-car crash on the Florida Turnpike in Lauderhill, with one victim identified as a 25-year-old woman riding as a passenger and the other as the driver of a separate vehicle. The crash happened Saturday near the Oakland Park Road overpass, in the stretch of highway between Commercial and Sunrise Boulevard.
What Happened Near the Oakland Park Road Overpass
According to WSVN, the collision involved three vehicles and claimed the lives of two people. Florida Highway Patrol troopers reported that one of the victims was a 25-year-old woman who had been riding as a passenger in one of the cars involved. The station reported that the driver of another vehicle in the crash was also killed.
Details beyond those basics remain limited. The station's report does not include the identities of those who died, a precise account of how the crash unfolded, or whether any citations have been issued. It's also unclear how many other people, if any, were involved or hurt in the wreck.
A Stretch of Highway With a History of Serious Crashes
This is not the first time this particular corridor of the Turnpike has seen a deadly or injury-heavy collision. About ten months earlier, a two-vehicle crash in Sunrise blocked all northbound lanes of the highway, according to Local 10. In March, a separate multi-vehicle crash in Lauderhill sent 12 people to the hospital, per a report from WSVN.
Other incidents this year have underscored how often serious wrecks occur along this part of Broward County. In August, a motorcyclist died in a Turnpike crash elsewhere in Broward, Local 10 reported. Around the same time, a multi-vehicle crash involving a bicyclist shut down West Sunrise Boulevard in Lauderhill in both directions, injuring four people, according to NBC 6 South Florida.
No further information has been released about Saturday's fatal crash, including what led up to it or whether anyone else involved was hurt. Authorities have not said whether any charges are expected.
