A new kind of condo is headed for Westmont, and it is not meant for people to sleep in — it is meant for their cars. Torque Motor Suites is planning a car-condominium development in the DuPage County suburb that would give collectors private, climate-controlled garage suites along with a shared clubhouse.
The project marks a new entrant in Chicago's market for car-collector condos, according to the report by Crain's Chicago Business, written by Dennis Rodkin. The Westmont development is planned as a 31-unit project, with construction expected to start in late 2026.
But the unit count has shifted across public records tied to the project. A commission report from September described Torque Motor Suites as a proposed 31-unit car-condominium project at 755 Oakmont Lane, according to citizenportal.ai. An earlier concept reviewed by the same outlet described a preliminary plan for 34 commercial condominium units at 701 Oakmont Lane, tailored primarily for vehicle storage and related private uses. The available records do not clarify whether those differing addresses and unit counts represent successive versions of the same proposal.
What Torque Says It's Building
On its own website, Torque Motor Suites describes the Westmont suites as starting at 1,200 square feet, with a standard 400-square-foot mezzanine included. The company says the development sits conveniently off Route 83 and will host monthly events for owners, and that owners will be able to rent the fully furnished clubhouse for special events or car shows. A company representative described the proposed units in September as privately owned commercial suites used for car storage and low-intensity day use, per citizenportal.ai.
The Westmont page on Torque's site also lists Indy 500 winner Helio Castroneves as a Torque partner and suite owner, a notable name attached to a company still working through local approvals.
Construction Plans
Torque's own website states that construction is starting in late 2026 and that it is now taking reservations. Crain's Chicago Business reports that the developer has funds to get rolling.
It is also unclear from the public record whether Westmont's governing board has granted final approval or whether all necessary permits have been issued for the project.
A Pattern Playing Out Across the Suburbs
Westmont would not be the first Chicago-area suburb to get a car-condo complex. Back in 2020, a Lake County community development director noted that similar concepts had already been approved or were under development in Naperville, Palatine and Mundelein, according to the Chicago Tribune. That same report described Big Door Mundelein, a car-condo storage project at 1405 Wilhelm Road that was scheduled to open that September, with principal John Victor saying he had already received deposits for 30% of its parcels. A separate Garage Lodge proposal from Pinpoint Developments president Rick Kriva was also in the works at the time, targeting a vacant 10-acre industrial parcel at 629 Rose Road in Lake Zurich.
Beyond Storage: Building a Community
Torque's plans for a clubhouse and monthly owner events add a social element to the Westmont project.
Torque is not stopping at Illinois. According to THE SHOP, the company is planning to advance into four new communities: Westmont, Noblesville, Nolensville and Birmingham. Its Blue Ash, Ohio facility offers a window into what that expansion might look like: Phase I includes 30 private garage suites. Torque's own site describes that Phase I as including thirty suites and an owner clubhouse, and says both its Blue Ash and Oakley communities are now open with owners already moved in.
Whether Westmont ends up with 30, 31 or 34 units — and whether construction begins by February or waits until early 2027 — remains to be seen as the project works through the local approval process. What is clear is that Torque is betting Chicago's suburbs have room for more places to park a Porsche in style.
