A woman wearing a Halloween costume was shot to death early Sunday on a residential block of Oak Park, with investigators recovering approximately 29 shell casings at the scene. Police say the shooting happened at about 12:30 a.m. in the 1100-block of Lyman Avenue, and that a man pulled out a gun and opened fire on the woman after the two were seen arguing.
According to ABC7 Chicago, police said video captured by a Ring camera allegedly shows the man and woman arguing before he pulled out a gun and started shooting at her. The woman was taken to Loyola University Medical Center, where she later died, police said. Investigators told the station they found approximately 29 shell casings from the scene.
A separate account from Oak Park's local news outlet offers slightly different timing details, reporting that Oak Park police responded to a call at 12:29 a.m. and found the woman with multiple gunshot wounds. That outlet reported police said there were two rounds of shots fired and that ultimately 29 shell casings were found at the scene — consistent with the shell-casing count given to ABC7. Paramedics transported the woman to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, where she was pronounced dead at 12:57 a.m., per the same account.
Identities Still Unknown as Detectives Chase Leads
Police said the identities of both the victim and the offender remain unknown, according to ABC7 Chicago's report. No other information was available, police told the station. The woman was wearing a Halloween costume at the time of the shooting, a detail that underscores how abruptly the night turned violent for trick-or-treaters and neighbors nearby.
Oak Park detectives are actively pursuing all leads, a village spokesperson told the outlet covering local Oak Park news. No arrests have been announced, and the relationship between the woman and the man seen on the Ring footage has not been disclosed by investigators.
Looking at Oak Park's Recent Violence
The shooting adds to a string of gun violence that has rattled the suburb over the past year and a half. In April 2025, Oak Park police arrested six people — three adults and three juveniles — in connection with a separate deadly shooting, according to CBS Chicago. Just last month, a man was killed and a woman was injured in a shooting at the Oakbrook Center mall parking lot, with three people taken into custody, Oak Brook police said, as reported by ABC7 Chicago.
Residents looking to track reported crime in the village can consult the Village of Oak Park's crime map, which reflects crimes as they have been reported to police. The department also publishes summary reports on the enforcement activities of its officers through its activity reports page. For now, the Lyman Avenue shooting remains an open case, with the victim's name, the shooter's identity, and the circumstances that led to the gunfire all unresolved as detectives continue working leads.
