Seeing as how today's a Spare the Air Day with temperatures expected to top 90 degrees, it seems like a good day to talk about energy. Specifically, how to use less of it.

If you run a business in District 5, you're in luck. Through a program called SF Energy Watch, the City wants to give you a free assessment of your business to help you save energy -- and money. Here's the deal. Every few months dating back to 2007, SF Energy Watch has focused on a different SF district. It's currently District 5's turn. Over the next few weeks, reps from SF Energy Watch will be asking business owners and landlords in the area if they'd like a free on-site energy assessment, to find ways of cutting down on energy usage. They'll be looking for stuff like outdated equipment, old-timey incandescent lightbulbs, unnecessary daytime lighting, etc. Then they'll make recommendations on ways to upgrade these energy-suckers and cut down on costs. The District 5 walk-throughs will be offered through November, after which you can still get an assessment -- you'll just have to contact them directly to set one up. SF Energy Watch is a joint project between the City and PG&E, and the costs of administering the program are covered by PG&E ratepayers. Namely, all of us. So, maybe it's not totally free. But, still. To learn more, go here, or call the SFEW at (415) 355-3769. And if you're lucky enough to have air conditioning today, try to use it sparingly, okay? And/or invite us over.
