Here's a trio of updates on recent crimes that have occurred in the neighborhood.
First -- and this one's not so much a crime as an emergency, to our knowledge -- reader Paul B. sends in the above photo from a 1-alarm fire that hit 616 Haight Street on Wednesday. According to SF Appeal, crews responded to a call around 4:30pm, put out the fire, and left the scene by 5:10pm. There were no reports of injuries, while the cause and any potential damages are unknown. Thanks to all other readers who tipped us to this one.
An update on the burning car / body found on Rose St. early Monday morning: The Examiner sheds some light on the relationship between 29-year-old suspect Almon Johnson and victim Vanessa Herrera. Apparently Johnson was the father of Herrera's 7-month-old son, according to family members. SF Appeal adds that Johnson is now believed to have strangled Herrera in Sacramento, after which he drove her to San Francisco and set the car on fire. Johnson was supposed to enter a plea on Thursday, but was "too ill" to appear in court, according to the Deputy Public Defender -- or "mentally unfit," according to the Examiner. The plea entry was postponed until Monday, and bail was set at $10 million.
And finally, in last Friday's shovel attack and stabbing on Page Street, the stabbing death of shovel-wielder Anthony Jones has been ruled self-defense, and the still-unidentified stabber will not face criminal charges. According to the Examiner:

District attorney spokesman Seth Steward said Wednesday that the man who stabbed Jones will not be prosecuted for the death. "If it happened as a result of someone defending themselves, then legally they don't have to be charged," police Lt. Troy Dangerfield said. We'll keep you posted on any developments.
