Castro nudists are alleging that they are being increasingly harassed by the SFPD for wearing cock rings while they're "hanging out" in public. Mitch Hightower, founder and organizer of the annual San Francisco NUDE IN event, posted on his blog that,
The San Francisco Police Department has begun regularly dispatching groups of uniformed officers from the Mission Station to the Castro Commons Plaza, (aka Jane Warner Plaza), on Cock Ring Patrol. Those frequenting the area report that either a duo or trio of cops approach selected male nudists and inform them that wearing cock rings draws undue attention to the genitals, and is therefore, under the law, considered to be lewd conduct. Nudists, even those not wearing a cock ring at the time, are also informed that they will face arrest if caught wearing a cock ring and will subsequently be required to register as a sex offender.
Mitch also said that over Labor Day weekend one male nudist was warned that his public nudity could be considered lewd because he was wearing a HAT. Maybe his hat was fabulous and super distracting, but lewd has less to do with amazing hats and more to do with having a boner, right? But I digress. Mitch tried to get in touch with the Mission Police Station, but was unable to. SF Weekly got a hold of Officer Carlos Manfredi who denies there is any "penis patrolling" going on saying, "If a person is offended by it or annoyed in any way, we can respond and cite the person, but we can't just [walk up] and say this is something we will cite you for." The third annual NUDE IN Body Freedom Demonstration is scheduled for Saturday, September 22nd at noon and organizers are encouraging supporters and attendees to wear hats and cock rings to challenge the lewd conduct assertions
