The race is on to crown San Francisco's neighborhood of the year, and Hayes Valley is off to a good start.

Real estate website Curbed is holding its annual Curbed Cup, a tournament pitting 16 of the city's top neighborhoods against each other in a battle for supremacy. In the first round, held last week, Hayes Valley defeated SoMa, 72.7% to 27.3%. We now face Russian Hill, which bested the Mission in a squeaker. So what is the neighborhood of the year, exactly? It's "a neighborhood that saw the most happen. We're talking new restaurants, new development, fun parklets, totally awesome retail, and the ineffable but real sense of where the action was in the past 12 months." We may be biased, but that sure sounds like Hayes Valley to us. Of course, this is all just silly fun; in reality, it's impossible to quantify how much greater Hayes Valley is than all other neighborhoods. Still, there's nothing wrong with a little friendly competition. Especially if we win...
