Do We Have a Garbage Problem?

Do We Have a Garbage Problem?
We're lucky to have over seventy restaurants, cafes, and bars in Hayes Valley. (It's true, we counted.) But one downside of all those food options is all the trash they produce.

Reader Brian W. sent in the above photo taken outside Mazzat at Fell and Laguna recently. The scene shows a pile of food scraps, empty cans, and other kitchen trash strewn about the sidewalk. While it's impossible to tell from his photos whether the restaurant disposed of the waste improperly or whether someone just knocked over the nearby trash bins, we've definitely noticed similar scenes around the neighborhood. As Brian puts it, "This is not a problem with just one cafe or restaurant, it's many. From the ice cream shop dumping their garbage into the cans in the park next door... to raw food being thrown on the street." So we'd like to hear from you, readers, about whether you've noticed any particularly unneighborly disposing of trash by the food establishments of Hayes Valley. We'll pass along your comments to any offending restaurants, in the hopes of "encourag[ing] better relations with those of us who live here and want to support and eat there, but also want them to be responsible for their messes," as Brian rightly puts it.
