Neighborhood Map Jam

Neighborhood Map Jam
This Saturday in the panhandle: meet your neighbors and help create a digital map of the nabe.

What will be happening is a sort of real-life wikimap of important neighborhood features, which means, of course, the more input, the better it will be. Here's a description from Jesse Biroscak, the creator of the event:
Let's create a digital map of the shared assets in our neighborhood! Whether it's a library, a park or playground, community garden, tool lending library, or a public bathroom - Let's get these shared services logged so we can all find what we need when we need it. (Think emergencies like fires or earthquakes... or finding a new local park or resource to explore.) We'll use easy tools - google maps, specifically. I'll give a brief lesson on how to create a map with a smartphone, and then we'll get going! Meeting place: the gates to children's playground in the Panhandle between Clayton and Ashbury. We'll head out to start mapping around 9:45-10am. Otherwise, give me (Jesse) a call to see where we are. More info on the type of event I'm looking to hold: [link]
At the link, there's a pretty persuasive paragraph on why a map jam sounds awesome, and how it could benefit the Haight particularly:
Mapping all of the sharing services in your city not only shows that another world is possible--it shows it’s already here. Not to mention that asset maps are powerful organizing tools. They make community assets more visible--which creates a foundation for further community development. Higher awareness of shared assets can lead to more collaborations between sharing projects and new project ideas to fill in the gaps. And from our tests, they get a lot of use. Your map might get thousands of visits in just a few months after creating it.
Shared space in the Haight is a contentious issue, and getting together to fill in gaps and make it better for everyone seems like a good place to start addressing our problems. If you're interested, you can RSVP over at nextdoor. [Thanks to Alan for the tip. Remember, you can always shoot us tips: tips[at]uppercasing[dot]com.]
