Pushback On Proposed WTS Site At Haight & Cole
We mentioned back in January that there was a notice about a new AT&T wireless telecommunications services site going up on the roof of Earthsong. Well, some concerned citizens have stepped forward with ... well, concerns.

AT&T proposed the third site at Haight & Cole to patch gaps in their current coverage. However, the argument against the new site is that there is a site at Haight & Masonic that is currently unfinished, and we can't know if there are still gaps until that one is done. We can't speak to what it will be like once the new site at Masonic is done, but an informal poll of AT&T users shows us that a majority of them feel like their coverage makes them cry on the regular, like when they have to stand in the middle of the street outside their apartment to call their parents once a week. (Poll may have been skewed by sampling errors.) If the new site goes up, there will be a total of 33-37 antennae within six blocks of each other.
They go on to argue that the building at the corner of Haight & Masonic (Earthsong) is a historical site, that the antennae on the roof would present an increased fire risk, that the building and property value would decline, and that there is an increased risk of crime near antennae sites due to "theft of copper and electroic equipment." At this stage, the concerned citizens have met with Vallie Brown and have been encouraged to gain neighborhood support. To this end, they're going door to door with letters to the Planning Commission that people can sign.
