We try not to plug Booksmith too much around here (because, full disclosure, we work there), but they've got some goings-on this week we thought you should know about.
First up: tomorrow at 7:30, they'll host Owen Egerton on book tour. Owen is a comedian out of Austin, Texas, and he'll be there to talk about his third book, How Best to Avoid Dying. The first time they hosted Owen, he was in town to talk about his first book, The Book of Harold, which follows the adventures of the balding overweight guy in the cubicle next to you who just so happens to be the son of God. Last year, he came back for his second book, Everyone Says That at the End of the World, which chronicles the days before the apocalypse, partially through the eyes of a hermit crab named Click. His new one is a short story collection, and you can watch a trailer here to enjoy Owen lipsynching to Video Killed the Radio Star while he contemplates his own mortality. In addition to being a hilarious and sensitive writer, Owen is a brilliantly entertaining performer. Plus, it's free. WORD/PLAY this Friday As a part of their series of social events (they basically turn the bookstore into a hangout), they're hosting a game show on Friday night called Word/Play. They take six writers, split them into two teams, and put them through three rounds of parlor games themed around books. It's raucous and participatory, and they've got an all-star crop of panelists this time around: Casey Childers, Steven Westdahl, and Nate Waggonner from Write Club SF; Sarah Griffin, an Irish emigrant and author; and Lara Starr and Melissa Manlove from Chronicle Books. It costs $10, but that comes with free drinks. Can't beat it. You can get tickets here. LEMONY SNICKET & LISA BROWN on Sunday On Sunday at 3, they'll host Lemony Snicket, a very elusive local author, and Lisa Brown, a less elusive local illustrator, for their new book 29 Myths on the Swinster Pharmacy, a mysterious pharmacy with styrofoam heads in the window. To properly celebrate the occasion, The Ice Cream Bar will be in the house with a special soda (sour phosphate) they've concocted specifically for the event. It costs $5 to RSVP, but you can later spend that $5 in the store on a copy of 29 Myths. You can do so here. We'll see you there!
