As we reported in April, a new set of upgrades are in development for the multi-use area at Waller & Stanyan streets. It's the same space in which the Upper Haight Farmers Market and Off the Grid hold court each week, and between events, the space is largely unused except as a basic skate area for neighborhood enthusiasts.

Going forward, the space may be embraced as a mini skate haven for the area. The San Francisco Skateboard Association (SFSA), with the assistance of Kent Uyehara from FTC, are in the process of obtaining a Community Opportunity Fund grant to finance the project.

Now, we've got a look at what the proposed space could look like if plans progress. They include skate elements like a concrete quarter pipe, concrete bank and flat rail, plus some landscaping, seating and "hardscape" elements like a painted curb, access gate and raised sidewalk "stage":

Uyehara told Hoodline that the idea is to have structures with multiple purposes. For instance, structures may be installed that can function as benches during Off the Grid, and as skate fixtures during the rest of the week. You'll see that the plans also include trash bins, picnic tables, and water fountains, which would likely improve the functionality of the space even if the skaters disappeared entirely.

The next step is getting the grant granted. The official decision will come down this fall, and if funding is secured, construction will begin next year.

"The SFSA is very excited about this improvement plan for Waller Street closure and hope that it’s chosen as a Rec & Park Dept. community grant recipient this fall," Uyehara said. "Thanks to the Haight Street community for your support."
