Pride Weekend is just around the corner, and events are starting to heat up. Here are a few things going on this weekend, before things really start to get busy next weekend. And don't forget, this Sunday is Father's Day.
Friday, June 19th
ACT UP: In celebration of the ACT UP Reunion in SF: 25th Anniversary of the 6th International AIDS Conference, Magnet is hosting a free event tonight called What's Your Damage. It's an evening of "art, performance and dialogue on the subject of how queers and activists who struggled through the crisis of the '80s and '90s are surviving, dealing and getting by in a present that is haunted and informed by that past." It starts at 8:30pm; check their Facebook page for more info. Events for the ACT UP reunion are taking place throughout the weekend, at different venues in the Castro and Mission.
Dodgeball: The WOW- Women on Women Dodgeball Tournament takes place tonight, and you won't want to miss it, especially with guest appearances from the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence and the Xtreme Supreme. The registration date for participating has already passed, but you can still stop by and catch all of the action. Doors open at the Eureka Valley Recreation Center at 6pm, and the games begin at 7:30pm. Admission for spectators is $5.
Frameline: Last month, Hoodline told you all about the Frameline Festival lineup. (If you haven't already watched the Wizard of Oz-themed festival trailer starring Peaches Christ, you're missing out.) Now, the time has finally come to sit down and enjoy some great LGBT-centered films. The festival kicked off last night at the Castro Theatre and continues through Pride Weekend. On Friday, they'll be showing Liz in September (7pm) and Those People (9:30pm). Tickets for the event range between $10-12.
Saturday, June 20th
Clean Up: Grab your work clothes and bring a friend to the Community Clean Team cleanup this weekend in the Castro. They'll be weeding, re-chipping medians, painting public furniture, removing graffiti and planting to make the neighborhood more beautiful. Lunch will be provided to the volunteers, but an RSVP required. Registration begins at 8:30am at the Harvey Milk Civil Rights Academy, and the event goes from 9am-1pm. To volunteer for the event, contact SFDPW at: [email protected] or (415) 641-2600.
Brunch: Manos Nouveau, the French-Latin restaurant that opened late last year in the former Pica Pica space, launches their new brunch menu this weekend (Saturday-Sunday, 11am-2pm). Chef Gualberto Nic Camara's menu is divided into pequeños (smaller bites for snacking & sharing), brunch mains, and a handful of sides, with options like chicken breast croquetas ($20), stuffed zucchini ($18), and a filet mignon-ribeye burger ($23). They'll also offer Latin dishes like tacu-tacu, a Peruvian favorite that combines two eggs, sweet plantains, Peruvian rice, and black beans with fried cheese ($16). Cocktail options include agave wine oyster shooters ($10) and tropical fruit mimosas ($10).
Photo Exhibit: Don't Dream It...Be It!, a photo exhibit celebrating "drag, theatre, music and love of life," opens Saturday at the Harvey Milk Photo Center with a reception hosted by Peaches Christ. The party goes from 6-10pm, and is free to the public. The exhibit will be up until July 18th.
Sunday, June 21st
Birthday Bash: Though it's not technically in the Castro, plenty of locals will be at El Rio Sunday afternoon for Daytime Realness: Heklina's Birthday Bash, a.k.a. Retirement Home Realness. Hosted by Heklina and DJ Carnita along with music from Stanley Frank, Jenna Riot and MC2, the party will feature a variety of daylit performances and BBQ from Sneaky's BBQ. Party on the patio from 2pm-8pm. $8-10.
Find Your Daddy: Start your Father's Day off by grabbing a cup of coffee at Bearbucks, then head over to Daddy's Barbershop, which bills itself as "not your father's barbershop," for a haircut. Afterwards stop by 440 Castro for their Sunday Beer Bust from 3pm-8pm. $8 buys all the beer you can drink, and the possibility of running into your daddy.
