Here's our latest recap of some recent crimes and injuries in the Financial District, North Beach and adjoining neighborhoods, as reported by SFPD sources. Though not meant to be comprehensive, it should serve as a brief snapshot of recent activity to help locals stay informed. We'll also occasionally include snippets from SFPD Central Station Capt. David Lazar's newsletter.
In this week's Central Station newsletter, Capt. Lazar touts the "incredible National Night Out event" held Aug. 4th at the Salesian Boys' and Girls' Club parking lot, 680 Filbert St. And he congratulates Deputy Chief Garret Tom—who was captain of Central Station for two years prior to Capt. Lazar—on his promotion from commander.
Capt. Lazar also shared the news of another auto burglary arrest in Fisherman's Wharf that resulted in a tourist from Salt Lake City recovering his camera, camera lens, laptop and backpack, totaling $4,300 worth of property. And he announced a community walk for the night of Aug. 6th to address a rash of recent sexual batteries on Russian Hill.
Now for the crime roundup.
- An 18-year-old man was robbed of money and a sweatshirt at 12:30am Aug. 1st at Fourth and Market streets in the FiDi. Two adult men and a male youth approached the victim from behind. One suspect pulled out an Airsoft handgun and pointed it at the victim. The other two suspects went through the victim's pockets and took his property. They fled the area on foot and were arrested by officers.
- In another robbery with force the same day, Aug. 1st, at Fourth and Market streets at 8:55pm, a 23-year-old man was using his phone when two suspects—a woman and a man—ran up from behind and grabbed his phone. The victim gave chase, and the woman punched him in his face. He fell onto the ground and the suspects continued to run from the scene. The victim suffered a cut to his eye.
- A store on the 300 block of Grant Avenue near Union Square was robbed at 3:50pm Aug. 2nd. Four young women entered the store with empty bags and filled them with numerous clothing items, including yoga pants and sweatshirts. As they left the store, they pushed a 60-year-old female security guard.
- In yet another robbery, this one at 5:05pm Aug. 4th at Post Street and Grant Avenue by Union Square, two men coerced a male youth, age 17, to buy a CD. The suspects then grabbed an additional amount of money from the victim's hand and fled the scene on foot.
- A more violent robbery happened when a man struck another man with a flashlight a couple of times on the 600 block of Lombard Street in North Beach at 1:48am Aug. 4th, causing non-life-threatening injuries. As the victim fell to the ground, the suspect took money from the victim’s right pocket and fled the scene on foot.
- Finally, another robbery happened at 10pm Aug. 4th at Clay and Drumm streets in the FiDi. A man, age 66, dropped some money on the ground, and another man demanded it from him, simulating a firearm. The victim complied.
