
While we don't report on every crime, we do our best to keep you informed of major crimes and safety concerns in the neighborhood. Here's a selection of crimes reported in and around the Tenderloin during the month of March. All details are pulled from the SFPD's daily crime recaps, unless otherwise noted.
Four Shootings & Stabbings on March 3rd
Between 3am and 11pm Thursday, March 3rd, four separate incidents in the Tenderloin and Mid-Market resulted in one death and three serious injuries.
At 3:12am, a 49-year-old man was found bleeding from the neck on the 900 block of Market Street, between Fifth and Sixth streets. According to police, the victim was stabbed with a sharp object, possible a screwdriver, in the neck. The man was transferred to the hospital with a non-life-threatening wound. Police did not identify a suspect.
Then, at 4am, police responded to a shooting on Market Street between Eighth and Ninth streets. According to police, the victim and an unidentified suspect were in a verbal argument when the suspect shot the victim with a handgun. The victim was transported to the hospital in critical condition.
At 7:40pm, 41-year-old San Francisco resident Donnie Smith was fatally stabbed at Turk and Leavenworth. Smith was trying to break up a fight between two women when a male suspect jumped in and stabbed him multiple times.
Then, around 10:11pm, a 36-year-old man sustained life-threatening injuries after being shot on the 500 block of Ellis Street, reportedly while inside Amigos Market.
Police have not released updates on these investigations.
Traffic Fatality
56-year-old Michael Gilmore was struck and killed in a hit-and-run at Leavenworth and Ellis, around 6:45pm on March 12th. Gilmore was crossing southbound on Leavenworth Street when the driver of a silver Dodge minivan, heading westbound on Ellis, struck him and a second, unidentified victim, who sustained minor injuries. Police have not released additional information on this investigation.
More Stabbings
At 1:15pm March 22nd, a person was stabbed while on Golden Gate between Larkin and Hyde. The suspect walked up and stabbed the victim from behind. Police report that the victim was uncooperative, and a suspect was not identified.
An argument between one individual and four men about how to treat a woman escalated into a stabbing at 3:10am March 18th. The men were on the 700 block of O'Farrell Street when the unidentified victim got into the argument with them. One of the suspects then stabbed the victim. The victim was transferred to the hospital, and none of the suspects were apprehended.
ATM Robbery
A 31-year-old man was robbed at 5am March 4th, at the ATM at Cyril Magnin and Ellis streets. While the man was at the ATM, the suspect, a woman age 35-40, hugged him. He then realized his phone was missing, and searched the area for the suspect. When he found her, he asked for his phone, and she fled the scene.
Four others—two men in their 30s to 40s and two unidentified individuals—then approached the victim and said they could help if he withdrew money from the ATM. The victim complied, but the suspects knocked him to the ground and ran off with his wallet.
Robbery At Gunpoint
A man was pistol-whipped and robbed around 3am March 7th, on the 400 block of Ellis Street. As the 38-year-old victim was walking, two suspects saw him remove cash from his pocket. The unidentified men then approached and demanded the money. One suspect hit the victim with the gun, and when he fell to the ground, the suspects stole his property and fled. The victim was transported to the hospital. No arrests were made.
At 1:30am March 27th, a 39-year-old man was robbed at gunpoint by two 18-year-old men at Sixth and Market. One suspect approached the victim from the side while the other approached from behind. The first suspect then brandished a gun, while the other took the victim's backpack. They both fled, but were subsequently arrested.
Robbery With Knife
An 18-year-old was robbed by a man with a knife at 2:40pm on March 19th, on the 1000 block of Market Street. The suspect approached and pointed a knife at the victim, before lunging at the victim and dropping the knife on the ground. As the victim reached for the knife, he dropped his phone. The suspect then grabbed the phone and fled. No arrest was made.
Robbery With Force
A 28-year-old man was robbed at Market and Jones around 9:30pm March 8th, while searching for previously stolen property. He had made his way to Market and Jones by tracking his stolen items on his phone; once there, he spoke with people in the area about the location of his stolen property. However, one 18-21-year-old man grabbed his phone. The victim confronted him, but was pushed out of the way by another man of the same age. Both suspects then fled northbound on Leavenworth in a green four-door vehicle.
At 11:40pm March 11th, a 32-year-old man was robbed at Cyril Magnin and Eddy. The victim was walking when two unidentified suspects approached from behind and hit him on the head. The victim then fell backward, and both suspects stepped on his hand before taking his property and fleeing. No arrest was made.
In a similar incident the following day, a 20-year-old man was robbed by three suspects around 1:30am at Cyril Magnin and Ellis. The victim was approached by the suspects, who started punching him. The suspects then simulated handguns and demanded his phone, money and belt and fled. None were arrested.
A 28-year-old woman was robbed around 10:50pm March 16th, while standing near her car at Ellis and Leavenworth. A 40-year-old male approached the victim and pushed her against the car before taking her property. The suspect then fled southbound on Leavenworth and was not apprehended.
A 24-year-old man was robbed at 4am March 19th at Turk and Taylor. The victim was walking when four men pushed him against a wall, reached into his pockets and stole his money. There were no injuries or arrests.
Just after 8:15pm March 24th, a 67-year-old woman was assaulted and robbed by two 40 to 45-year-old women while waiting for a cab at Golden Gate and Leavenworth. One suspect approached the victim and demanded money; when the victim refused, she was assaulted. The second suspect then held the victim down while the other took her property. Both suspects fled south on Leavenworth, and were not apprehended.
Hotel Room Hot Prowl
A 35-year-old man was robbed at 4:30am March 9th by two suspects in his hotel room on the 700 block of Ellis Street. The victim invited a 25-year-old woman and 47-year-old man into his room. The female suspect found and took money from a drawer, and tried to flee. The victim confronted the suspect and they fought over the money. The second suspect then battered the victim while the other escaped with the cash. The male suspect was then taken into custody.
Turk Street Fire
A resident of the first block of Turk Street set a small fire inside his apartment at about 11:30pm March 28th. The fire spread to the 32-year-old man's blinds, setting off the fire alarm and sprinklers. The SFFD and SFPD responded, and the suspect was arrested.
TLCBD To Launch Fresh Batch Of Surveillance Cameras
