In the next few days around North Beach you have the chance to learn a bit, laugh a bit and, of course, eat and drink (and eat and drink some more).
This Saturday, the San Francisco Maritime National Park Association will host a "Women in Maritime Trades" panel discussion to help celebrate the National Park Service's centennial. For $10, you can hear stories from women on their maritime experiences and accomplishments, including the fourth generation captain of the Angel Island-Tiburon Ferry, Maggie McDonogh, and Captain Nancy Wagner, the first woman ship pilot in the U.S. and a member of the first female graduating class of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.
On Monday, swing by Doc's Lab (124 Columbus Ave.) to hear the comedy stylings of Jena Friedman, who has also worked as a filmmaker, field producer at The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and writer for the Late Show with David Letterman.
And what would a busy week in North Beach be without some food and drink? Local favorite Anchor Brewing will have a tap takeover at Rose Pistola's (532 Columbus Ave.) on Monday to help celebrating the upcoming American Craft Beer Week, as well as the Italian eatery's 20th anniversary.
Elsewhere in North Beach news, Boxcar Theatre's The Speakeasy will be setting up a new location on the Chinatown/North Beach border sometime in August. And The Bold Italic singled out Coi's Squab In Mourning —yes, that's grilled pigeon—as one of the top ten daring delicacies in the city.
