Now in its 30th year, Burning Man, the annual temporary metropolis in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert (a.k.a. Black Rock City or simply "the Playa"), has become a deeply rooted San Francisco cultural event. With its focus on community, art, self-expression, and self-reliance, and its history of rebellion and innovation, it's no surprise that the event started as a small, renegade San Francisco party, held at Baker Beach.
For those getting ready to head to the Playa in a couple of weeks, or just interested in experiencing a touch of Burning Man at home, a bunch of events are going down in the run-up to the first day of the festivities, August 28th. Here's a look at where Lower Haight Burners are preparing for the annual exodus.
- Vinyl Dreams (593 Haight St.) is hosting a free, BYO pre-Burn BBQ from 6pm to close tomorrow, August 13th. Music will be provided by a surprise guest DJ.
- In celebration of their 10th year supporting Playa-inspired local fashion, Wild Feather is hosting their final Beyond the Fence event from 12-6pm tomorrow at Public Works. The event brings together local DJs, cocktails and over 30 Wild Feather vendors, such as Atypical Tutus and Warrior Within Designs. Early birds will also score free mimosas while they shop.
- From 5-11pm Thursday, August 18th, San Francyclo (799 Haight St.) is hosting Burner Prep Party: Wiggle Sesh. In partnership with Wild Feather, the shop is offering happy hour drinks and snacks at an all-donation bar, while DJs play sets through the evening. The event promises low-cost bikes, lighting, clothes and accessories “for your visit home to the Playa.”
- Finally, Underground SF (424 Haight) is throwing a pre-Burning Man fundraiser for their neighbor Vinyl Dreams from 9pm-2am Saturday, August 27th. Admission is $5 at the door, and DJs Dmitri and Mike Bee (owner of Vinyl Dreams) will be representing “San Francisco's many disparate dance music tribes.”
