The number of crime incidents in Tacoma saw an overall decrease last week, for the second week in a row, according to data from SpotCrime, which collects data from police agencies and validated sources. Incidents fell to 218 for the week of March 4, down from 275 the week before.

The specific offenses that decreased the most were theft and arson. Theft fell to 58 incidents last week, from 97 the week before. Arson went from four to two. Reports of theft have continued to fall for the last two weeks.

There was one reported shooting last week. That represents a steady state from the previous week. There were also six incidents of robbery.

Among the few types of offenses that saw an uptick last week, reports of assault went from 24 to 25. Incidents of burglary rose from 18 to 19, and vandalism went up from 12 to 13.

There were 94 reports of "other" crimes, a decrease of 19 from the previous week. SpotCrime's broad "other" category includes a variety of offenses like fraud, trespassing, public disturbance and traffic violations. Of those incidents, 41 involved arrests, such as for drug possession, down from 57 reported arrests the week before.

As far as where crime is concentrated in the city, South End, New Tacoma and Central had the most reported incidents last week. South End and New Tacoma were at the top of the list the previous week as well.

New Tacoma experienced the largest drop in crime; incidents in the neighborhood have been falling for two weeks in a row. Crime reports in Eastside-ENACT also fell for a second week, and incidents in South End are down considerably as well.

Regarding when most crimes are committed, Wednesdays, Tuesdays and Mondays continued to produce the most crime incidents last week. The largest decrease from the previous week occurred on Sundays, Mondays and Saturdays, while incidents on Fridays and Wednesdays went up. Comparing times of day, early afternoon, after midnight and evening saw the most crime last week.
