Hail Satan?

A look at the intersection of religion and activism, tracing the rise of The Satanic Temple: only six years old and already one of the most controversial religious movements in American history. The Temple is calling for a Satanic revolution to save the nation's soul. But are they for real?

With a Tomatometer Score of 96 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, "Hail Satan?" has proven to be a critical darling since its release on April 17.

"Director Penny Lane frames her smart, level-headed documentary as a discussion about the Satanic Temple and its fight for religious equality," according to Adam Graham of the Detroit News.

The San Diego Reader's Matthew Lickona said, "The question mark in the title of Penny Lane's documentary on The Satanic Temple is integral to the story she's telling ... A fine, thought-provoking effort."

Catch it on the big screen at Roxie Theater (3117 16th St.) through Tuesday, May 21. Click here for showtimes and tickets.

Avengers: Endgame

After the devastating events of 'Avengers: Infinity War,' the universe is in ruins due to the efforts of the Mad Titan, Thanos. With the help of remaining allies, the Avengers must assemble once more in order to undo Thanos' actions and restore order to the universe once and for all, no matter what consequences may be in store.

With a Tomatometer Score of 94 percent and an Audience Score of 89 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, "Avengers: Endgame" has garnered plenty of praise since its release on April 26.

"What you will be getting when you walk into an inevitably overstuffed movie theater is something singular that reflects our age in a way that none of the MCU films that preceded it have — indeed, very few Hollywood spectacles ever have," noted Oliver Jones of the Observer.

The San Diego Reader's Matthew Lickona said, "The MCU will go on and on, but this chapter – and the American pragmatism vs. American ideals bromance that drove it – have well and truly come to their 'Excelsior! Nuff said!' moment."

It's playing at AMC Metreon 16 (135 Fourth St., Suite 3000) and Century San Francisco Centre 9 and XD (845 Market St.) through Wednesday, May 22, and the Balboa Theater (3630 Balboa St.) and Marina Theatre (2149 Chestnut St.) through Thursday, May 23. Click here for showtimes and tickets.

Long Day's Journey Into Night

Luo Hongwu returns to Kaili, the hometown from which he fled many years ago. He begins the search for the woman he loved, and whom he has never been able to forget.

With a Tomatometer Score of 92 percent and an Audience Score of 58 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, "Long Day's Journey Into Night" has become a favorite since its release in April of 2018.

The Chicago Tribune's Michael Phillips said, "Three different cinematographers worked on 'Long Day's Journey Into Night' and yet the results feel like a single, sustained puzzle that comes together on its own terms."

The San Francisco Chronicle's G. Allen Johnson noted, "If you're the adventurous type and like boundaries to be pushed, 'Long Day's Journey Into Night' might be worth a shot."

Want to see for yourself? It's playing at 4 Star Theater (2200 Clement St.) through Thursday, May 23. Click here for showtimes and tickets.

Shazam!

A boy is given the ability to become an adult superhero in times of need with a single magic word.

With a Tomatometer Score of 90 percent and an Audience Score of 87 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, "Shazam!" has racked up generally positive reviews since its release on April 5.

Time Out's Joshua Rothkopf said, "For a long, glorious stretch, Shazam! plays like the anti-Nolan antidote it is," while Matthew Rozsa of Salon.com stated, " 'Shazam!' is the funniest, sweetest and most innocent movie in the DC Extended Universe – a sign that it is at last ready to compete with Marvel."

In the mood for popcorn? It's playing at AMC Metreon 16 (135 Fourth St., Suite 3000) through Wednesday, May 22. Click here for showtimes and tickets.
