3 suspects arrested in rush-hour shooting incident on Market Street [Updated]Image: Google Maps

Yesterday, two Oakland residents were arrested on suspicion of shooting into a crowd and injuring a man on the 1000 block of Market Street (between Sixth and Seventh streets).

Officers from the Oakland Police Department identified the suspects as 21-year-old Elijah Ernest and 18-year-old Lerron Simpson. A third suspect in the incident, a juvenile, remains at large, according to SFPD. Update, 8/29: SFPD reports that on August 28, a 13-year-old boy identified as the third suspect in the incident was taken into custody in Oakland.

The shooting occurred just after 5:30 p.m. on August 20, when San Francisco police officers from the Tenderloin Station responded to a shots-fired call and related altercation.

When officers arrived, they located a 25-year-old male victim, who had sustained a face wound. The victim, who had previously been in an argument with one of the suspects, declined to cooperate with police. He was hospitalized for his injuries, and has since been released.

The Tenderloin Station investigative team located surveillance footage from shortly after the incident, which showed three suspects running across the 900 block of Market Street. In the footage, one of the suspects was seen shooting several rounds from a pistol into a nearby crowd of people, while another suspect physically assaulted an unknown witness.

Cellphone footage of the incident, submitted by a pedestrian witness, also shows another suspect “brazenly shooting a pistol toward a nearby crowd,” according to SFPD reports. KTVU was able to obtain some of the footage, viewable below:

Following last Tuesday’s shooting, a crime bulletin was issued to all local law enforcement agencies throughout the Bay Area, leading to the arrests of Ernest and Simpson on August 26. While taking them into custody, officers also seized a firearm.

Ernest and Simpson have been booked into the San Francisco County Jail for attempted murder and several other firearm-related charges. Ernest was also identified as a parolee at large, with an outstanding warrant for his arrest.

The investigation into the shooting incident is ongoing, and anyone with more information is encouraged to contact the SFPD 24-hour anonymous tip line at (415) 575-4444, or to text a tip to TIP411.

Update, 8/28: Due to a miscommunication with SFPD officers, a previous version of this article stated that the shooting occurred on the 800 block of Market Street, outside the Westfield San Francisco Centre shopping mall. The shooting actually occurred on the 1000 block of Market, near Sixth Street. We regret the error.
