North Beach has always been a place where residents and business owners go out of their way to support one another. So it’s fitting that, just in time for the holidays, neighborhood institution Tony’s Pizza Napoletana and newish cannabis shop North Beach Pipeline have cooked up a fun and tasty culinary collab.

Dubbed “Up in Smoke,” this pizza and pre-roll pairing is equal parts sweet, spicy, and smoky. While the combo is sure to put you in a merry mood, the promotion also aims to celebrate North Beach’s independent businesses. And to help destigmatize marijuana use in the neighborhood.

Tony Gemignani, owner of Tony’s Pizza Napoletana — one of San Francisco’s most popular pizzerias — as well as Capo's and Slice House, concocted a special pie for the collaboration. The 12-inch wood-fired pizza is topped with smoked mozzarella, millionaire’s bacon, pizzuti tomato, basil, volcano salt, and Chef Chris Cosentino’s umami spice.

“We’re always eager to welcome a new business to our loyal North Beach community,” says Gemignani. “The ‘Up in Smoke Pipeline Pizza' is indulgent and crave-able, the perfect pie to share with friends in Washington Square Park, along with Pipeline’s pre-roll.”

It's also an ideal option for refueling after holiday gift shopping in the neighborhood. Order the pizza to go, and you’ll receive your own little gift — a multicolored box designed by long-time North Beach resident and prominent artist Jeremy Fish. Vibrant and whimsical, the box depicts an iconic stoner character from the 70s. Fish, whose Fish Tank Gallery is next door to the Pipeline dispensary, designed the lid of the box to double as a bib. Just tear it off and slip it around your neck to keep pizza scraps at bay. The box also features a walking map of North Beach, highlighting new and iconic spots in the neighborhood.

Before or after devouring your pie, stroll over to North Beach Pipeline to get your “Up in Smoke” pre-roll, aka “The Pizza Joint.” Wrapped in a resealable, airtight glass tube decorated with illustrations by Fish, the joint is filled with Mother’s Milk, a pot strain noted for its heady, yet serene high. For an extra lift, it’s sprinkled with kief, a concentrated form of cannabis. The kief also enhances the flavor of the joint while softening the smoke to avoid overwhelming your tastebuds.

“We’re delighted to introduce cannabis to North Beach,” says Bam Deocampo, marketing director for North Beach Pipeline. “And what better way for our patrons to indulge in all that the neighborhood has to offer than a partnership with our favorite local restaurant, Tony’s Pizza.”

Show your “Up in Smoke” pizza box to the crew at Pipeline, and you’ll receive a $5 discount on your pre-roll ($15). If you buy the pre-roll first, present it at Tony’s to get $5 off your pizza ($30).

Tony’s Pizza Napoletana is located at 1570 Stockton Street; North Beach Pipeline is located 1335 Grant Avenue.
