The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has ordered Cruise, a self-driving car company, to reduce its fleet of autonomous vehicles (AVs) by 50% in San Francisco after a series of concerning incidents. Two recent collisions, one resulting in a passenger injury, led the DMV to step in, allowing Cruise to have a maximum of 50 driverless vehicles operating during the day and 150 during the night. Investigations are ongoing, and the DMV may choose to suspend or revoke testing and deployment permits if it deems a threat to public safety.
Local politicians and city officials have voiced concerns over the California Public Utilities Commission's recent decision to expand Cruise's permit. The order comes during a pivotal time for the AV industry, as both Cruise and Waymo were given the green light for unlimited fleet expansion and 24-hour paid passenger services in San Francisco.
