Illinois is set to receive a significant economic and environmental boost as Governor J.B. Pritzker announces the construction of a $2 billion Gotion electric battery facility in Kankakee County, according to a CBS News report. Slated to begin production in 2024, the new lithium battery plant in Manteno will not only create a plethora of job opportunities but also serve as a stepping stone towards a cleaner future.
The Governor's announcement highlights the expected creation of at least 2,600 jobs at the plant, helping boost Kankakee County's economy while simultaneously ushering in an era of clean energy-focused manufacturing. Furthermore, Gotion plans to soon open a manufacturing training academy to skillfully prepare employees for careers in the clean energy industry, as mentioned by Illinois.gov.
This colossal investment is a result of years of efforts by Governor Pritzker's administration to establish Illinois as a global leader in electric vehicle production and clean energy. The Gotion battery facility investment is regarded as the most significant manufacturing investment in Illinois in decades and the largest electric vehicle (EV) battery production investment in the state to date. As reported by Illinois.gov, the Gotion plant will contribute to meeting the Governor's goal of putting one million electric vehicles on the road by 2030.
Considerable groundwork has been laid by the state, including the Reimagining Energy and Vehicles Act, signed into law by Governor Pritzker in 2021. This act helped provide essential incentives for securing the deal with Gotion, accessorized through funds from the Invest in Illinois business closing fund. In addition, the state will grant funds to workforce providers to train regional employees, further-recruiting for the vast number of available jobs.
Once production commences, the Gotion lithium battery plant is expected to help strengthen the electric vehicle supply chain in Illinois and across the region. This development aids in the overall expansion and adoption of electric vehicles, ensuring that Illinois takes a giant leap forward towards a more sustainable and cleaner future.
