The City of Chicago has unveiled plans to transform the financially distressed Selina Hotel into a temporary shelter for the homeless during winter. As per the Office of the Mayor press release, the hotel at 100 E. Chestnut will provide refuge to those in need during the colder months for up to seven months, with the aid of an emergency and transitional housing grant.
The Selina Hotel, plagued by substantial financial troubles, had led its building owner to dissolve partnership with the hotel, causing layoffs. Chicago City responded by providing assistance to the laid-off workers to secure new placements on October 28. Converting the hotel into a shelter aligns with the City's objective to cater to the needs of its homeless citizens.
The official communique clarifies that the hotel is not utilized for asylum seekers. Rather, the program aims to optimally employ the hotel's 116 rooms to provide transient shelter for the city's homeless people.
