The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) has received approval for its $1.99 billion 2024 budget from the Chicago Transit Board. This budget represents a commitment to equitable services, continued fare maintenance, and improvements in bus and rail services, as well as system infrastructure according to the CTA.
Reflecting a 9.2 percent increase from the previous year's budget, CTA's commitment to workforce development, technological advancement, and service improvements is highlighted. CTA's President, Dorval R. Carter, Jr., expressed gratitude for feedback during the budget hearing process, underlining his resolve to make continual improvements in service, customer comfort, modernization, and equity.
In the 2024 budget, provisions have been made to enhance the customer experience, with initiatives such as enhanced security, improved Ventra fare system features, and a new ChatBot for customer service. In a socially responsible move, a program catering to victims and survivors of domestic abuse will provide pre-loaded Ventra Cards as per the CTA.
During 2023, CTA's efforts to expand its workforce came to fruition. Seven job fairs attracted over 3,000 potential employees and led to the hiring of several hundred new staff. Their aggressive recruiting allowed them to surpass their goal of hiring 700 new bus operators, with plans to hire 900 by the end of the year. This year, more than 2,000 new employees were hired, a significant increase from its typical annual hiring rate of 1,200.
The CTA's 2024–2028 Capital Improvement Program (CIP), separate from its operating funds, commits to $3.61 billion in projects over the next five years. It highlights CTA's commitment to modernization and infrastructural improvements in tracks, rail stations, buses, trains, facilities, and technologies. It includes the ambitious Red Line Extension project, which will enhance transit access and connectivity for the Far South Side of Chicago as per the CTA.
Slated for 2024 is the All Stations Accessibility Program (ASAP), which aims at accessibility modernization construction work at 14 funded rail stations, electrification of the 103rd Garage, production increases for the 7000-series railcars, and overhauls of the 5000-series. The expansion of the Refresh & Renew program plans to include more CTA employee workplaces and continuing rail station repairs and enhancements.
