A retail theft incident at a store in the 100 north block of State Street took a serious turn earlier this week when the suspect apprehended for stealing perfume bottles was also found to be armed with a loaded firearm. According to a post on the Cook County Sheriff's Office Facebook page, Sheriff’s Police were called to the scene after the store's Loss Prevention Officer detained the individual, who later admitted to the theft.
Upon the arrival of the officers, they discovered not only the stolen merchandise but also a loaded gun in the suspect's possession. The firearm discovery led to an additional charge of Aggravated Unlawful Use of a weapon, particularly because the individual had a suspended Firearms Owners Identification (FOID) card. The office revealed that felony charges were, as a matter of course, approved.
There has been no further information released regarding the identity of the person charged or additional specifics of the case. The incident stands as a reminder of the challenges that retail workers and law enforcement face in a landscape where theft can unpredictably turn violent. The Sheriff's office's swift response likely mitigated what could have become a more severe situation.
