Gunfire erupted in the Loop as two men were shot, one clinging to life, during a Saturday night confrontation aboard a CTA Red Line train.
The trouble began just after 10 p.m. when an argument escalated on a stationary train near the Roosevelt station, located at the 1100 block of South State Street. A man pulled a gun and opened fire, striking a 25-year-old multiple times — leaving him critically wounded, Chicago police said, according to the Chicago Tribune. A second victim, a 20-year-old man, was shot in the right shoulder and is reported in good condition.
Responders from the Chicago Fire Department raced the 25-year-old to Northwestern Memorial Hospital where he remains in critical condition. Meanwhile, the 20-year-old was transported to Stroger Hospital for treatment. The incident caused a stir among late-night commuters and led to police action in the downtown area.
Authorities have secured a weapon linked to the shooting and are questioning a person of interest in connection with the violent outbreak. No official charges have been announced as the investigation continues into the circumstances that led to the shooting aboard the Red Line train.
