Chicago's streets are set to get a heavy dose of law and order this weekend as the Chicago Police Department gears up to conduct a DUI Saturation Patrol in the 1st (Central) District. The operation is scheduled to aggressively kick off Friday, December 15, 2023, at 6 p.m. and will run until the early hours of Saturday, December 16, ending at 2 a.m., according to the department's announcement.
The initiative is designed to not only tackle impaired driving but also to enforce traffic laws more broadly, focusing especially on speed, alcohol-related offenses, and seat belt violations. Officers in the district will be on high alert, patrolling the area with the express purpose of quickly identifying and removing offending drivers from the roads. Adding to their arsenal, police vehicles equipped for speed detection will be deployed, ready to catch any individual bold enough to push past the legal limits.
In a move to expedite legal proceedings, the Chicago Police Department will also be rolling out its Breath Alcohol Testing (BAT) Mobile Unit. The unit serves a dual purpose: facilitating on-the-spot sobriety tests and allowing officers to issue charges of Driving under the Influence (DUI) without the delay inherent in transporting suspects for processing. This tactic ensures that alleged offenders can be processed and, where appropriate, released with Individual Recognizance Bonds (I-Bonds) directly at the site of the DUI Saturation Patrol.
This upcoming patrol highlights part of an ongoing effort to not only penalize but also actively prevent irresponsible driving behaviors that endanger everyone on the road. It reflects a zero-tolerance approach to driving offenses and shows a concerted effort to literally slow down to protect the lives of drivers and pedestrians alike. With the use of their mobile unit, Chicago police intend to not only arrest but also process DUI suspects with greater efficiency, ensuring a quick turnaround in the cooling winds of the city's justice system.
