Residents of Chicago's 2nd District are on alert following a string of motor vehicle thefts that have recently plagued the area. According to a community alert issued by the Chicago Police Department (CPD), multiple vehicles, specifically Jeep, Hyundai, and Kia models, have either been stolen or found with damaged steering columns. The thefts occurred while the vehicles were legally parked on the streets, leaving their owners to face the harsh reality of property crime in the Windy City.
The offenses reported took place between December 7 and December 9, across various locations in the Wentworth area, including blocks such as Blackstone and Kenwood Avenues. In the chilling early hours of the morning or the deceiving safety of midday, the victims returned to find their vehicles vanished or vandalized.
Chicago Police have released descriptors of the suspects involved in these incidents. The alleged perpetrators are three African-American males, thought to be between 15 and 18 years old, who were last seen wearing black clothing and bandanas. The aforementioned alert by the CPD urges the public to remain vigilant, report any suspicious activity, and take the necessary precautions to safeguard their vehicles from being easy targets.
To combat these occurrences, the CPD is offering tips to residents: among the advised measures, not leaving keys in the vehicle or leaving it running unattended stands out as basic yet crucial advice. Also recommended is the utilization of anti-theft devices, parking in well-lit areas, and keeping vehicles locked. For owners of the targeted Kia and Hyundai vehicles, steering wheel locks are available from local CAPS offices, and the city is providing a reimbursement program for GPS tracking devices. Additionally, the CPD provides a service to etch a traceable marking into your vehicle's catalytic converter.
The CPD's active response in the face of these thefts is a small reassurance for residents, who must now add "vigilance against theft" to their daily Chicago life. The police encourage community members to be the eyes and ears on the ground, reminding them that quick reporting could make all the difference in preventing these crimes. As the investigation continues, the officers are asking anyone with information to come forward and help bring these incidents to a halt, emphasizing the importance of community involvement in crime prevention.
