Tragedy struck Chicago's Back of the Yards neighborhood, where a young soccer star, Carlos Sanchez, 24, was gunned down earlier this week. The former high school athlete known for his remarkable skill on the pitch and his dedication to community service was shot multiple times on Monday evening near 49th Street and Hoyne Avenue, as reported by WLS. Walking the same streets that hailed his prowess, Sanchez's life was abruptly cut short; no arrests have been made yet in relation to the shooting, police say.
Lauded for his agility and sportsmanship, "Chispa" carried a legacy not only on his alma mater's soccer field at Back of the Yards College Prep but also within the hearts of those he lifted through his humanitarian work. Having had a partnership with nonprofit Buddy's Helpers, Sanchez committed to enhancing lives, and its director, Joe Trost, conveyed to WLS his heartbreak by describing Sanchez as someone "who did that on the field, helping his teammates win."
Illinois State Rep. Aaron Ortiz, who knew the victim personally as a guidance counselor and soccer coach, echoed this sentiment of loss, telling CBS, "He was a smart, kind, loving individual who really loved his community—Back of the Yards—but really love the game of soccer." The young star's reach transcended the green fields, as evident by a 2016 video featuring him donating shoes to families affected by gun violence.
Sanchez's alma mater's boys' soccer team honored their former standout with a touching tribute, describing him as "disciplined, humble, and empathetic to the world around him," according to a post on Instagram. The community, now dealing with the murder of someone who brought so much to so many, grapples with a poignant void. The Back of the Yards, a stronghold for kinship and sportsmanship, has lost a beacon, with Chicago Police continuing their search for the offender, as stated by CBS.
