A daylight robbery attempt in Chicago's Gage Park neighborhood ended in gunfire Tuesday morning when a 43-year-old man was shot while trying to escape his assailants. According to WGN-TV, the incident occurred just before 7:30 a.m. on the 5300 block of South Rockwell, where police found the victim suffering from a gunshot wound.
The attempted robbery unfolded as the man was entering his vehicle and was approached by a gray vehicle. Two individuals exited the vehicle, demanding money at gunpoint, as per the police reports. The victim, in a bid for safety, then ran from the robbers, only to be shot in the lower abdomen. Despite the early hour and the presence of bystanders, the attackers were undeterred, firing openly before fleeing the scene.
Emergency services rushed the man to Mt. Sinai Hospital, where he was reported to be in good condition. Details about the suspects remain scant as authorities are still on the hunt for the two gunmen who, after committing the brazen act, retreated to their vehicle and sped away southbound, the Chicago Police Department added.
What remains clear is that no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting, the Chicago Sun-Times reports. Gage Park, a typically bustling community, was thrust into a brief state of chaos as police canvassed for witnesses and evidence. Locals are urged to come forward with any information that might aid in the swift apprehension of those responsible for the shooting.
