A 25-year-old woman's life was tragically cut short following a catastrophic collision in Joliet, with the aftermath leaving four others critically injured, local authorities report. The victim, identified as Joseil Escalonda-Gomez, succumbed to her injuries at Advocate Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn on Tuesday, as confirmed by the Joliet Police Department. The Texas woman was a rear-seat passenger when the deadly incident unfolded early Monday morning, WLS informed.
In what appears to be a grave traffic miscalculation, the incident occurred at the intersection of South Chicago Street and McDonough Street at approximately 5:15 a.m. when a Volkswagen Passat, helmed by a 28-year-old Joliet man, barged into the intersection against a red light and collided with a semi-trailer. While the semi-trailer's driver came out unscathed, victims were swept up in critical conditions to various hospitals, with Joseil Escalonda-Gomez later passing away. The roadway subsequently faced hours of closure as the scene became the subject of a meticulous police investigation, according to Patch.
Chopper 7 hovered above the crash site around 7:30 a.m., revealing the twisted metal and agonizing remnants of the Volkswagen. Currently, the Joliet man who drove the vehicle remains in critical condition at Advocate Christ Hospital. Additionally, the chilling encounter sent a 26-year-old Joliet man and two 30-year-old Joliet women to the emergency wards of multiple medical facilities, reflecting the far-reaching impact of the crash. One of these women has since been declared stable, indicating a ray of hope amidst the devastation.
Authorities are probing the sequence of events leading to the horrific crash, with initial findings suggesting the semi was making a lawful crossing. "It is believed that the traffic light was green for southbound Chicago Street traffic and red for eastbound McDonough Street traffic; however, this remains under investigation," Joliet police shared. Despite the severity of the accident and the ongoing inquiries, no citations have been issued as the investigation continues. The Joliet Police Traffic Unit is reaching out, urging those who might hold evidence or video footage to step forward and contribute to the unraveling of this tragic occurrence.
